You know 9 Square in the Air is a great tool for physical education. It’s active, it’s fun and you love that kids completely forget that they are exercising.
Did you know that 9 Square in the Air can also serve as a fantastic teacher’s aide? It’s a great way to reinforce concepts learned in the classroom:
Math in the Square:
Are your students learning their multiplication facts? Use chalk or a dry erase marker to write out a problem in each square, so that every time the student completes a hit, they also shout the answer. For instance, if they are in the “6X4” box, they would shout “24!” as they hit the ball.
Creative Square:
Before your 9 Square in the Air session, have your students design a square. If you have more than nine students, allow them to work together. They can personalize their square or you can tie in a theme with what your class has been learning in art or in literature. Set up your game outside and hand out plenty of colored chalk for a fun and creative class.
Vocab Square:
When a student is “out” they have an opportunity to stay in the game if they can accurately spell a word, define it and use it in a sentence.
Science Square:
Assign every square a different element from the Periodic Table and have the students shout the element symbol as they hit the ball. If you have them written on interchangeable pieces of foam or cloth, you can keep moving them around and in and out of the 9 Square in the Air game to create an extra-challenging game.
Capital Square:
Every square has a state underfoot and students are tasked with saying the capital as they hit the ball. Just as with Science Square above, you can create a different square label for every state and keep switching them out so that kids review all the state capitals.
Time Square:
Is your class working on memorizing a whole host of historical events? Mark each notable date in a square and have the kids review as they play.
Language Square:
Practice counting in Spanish, colors in French or conjugate verbs in any language using 9 Square in the Air.
